AN EVENT OF IMPORTANCE TO ALL CANADIANS

The Col. Edward Jessup Branch in conjunction with the Johnstown United Church and with the co-operation of the Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley will host a one time only public display of a recently discovered historic document entitled, “Confirmation of the Peace”.

This calf skin document attached to the Great Seal Deputed of Upper Canada dates from 1800 and in effect appoints and charges 20 magistrates of the Johnstown District under the hand of Lt. Governor, General Peter Hunter.

This is of particular importance to Canada and Canadians as it was from the Johnstown area that a 1786 Letter of Petition was signed by sixteen local residents that found its way to London and was returned as the “Canada Act”, the constitutional basis of our Nation.  Some of the magistrates appointed by these Letters Patent also signed the 1786 letter.

While Elizabethtown-Kitley holds possession of this document, it was agreed that it would be displayed at the Johnstown United Church as this is the location of the original Johnstown Court House, the first in Upper Canada and where the subject magistrates would preside.

In addition to this document, there will be other artifacts and relic of the period on display, a Tea Room in operation, rest rooms, lots of parking and more.

This site in on Country Road #2 ( Heritage Highway ) on the bank of the St. Lawrence River at the junction of Highway 16.

Nearby and related Doors Open events are the Battle of the Windmill site and Fort Wellington in Prescott.
