The Old Registry Office

290 Henry St. W., Prescott, ON

Edward Jessup sold the lot to the Municipal Council of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville.

This stone structure is a well preserved example of an original administrative building, of Classical Vernacular style, believed to have been constructed around 1856.

The front facade, of rock-faced or rock-worked cut stone, is highlighted by a large pediment giving the building a somewhat classical appearance. The front door was originally centred and flanked by single windows on either side. The side walls are of plastered rubble stone construction and a later 2 storey 1 brick addition can be seen at the rear.

Around the 13 foot high interior ceiling, the cornice mouldings remain intact. An unusual construction feature of the house is its cast iron roof trusses. On an 1861-62 map of Prescott, the building was referred to as the "Registers Office" while 24 years later, on May 20, 1886, it was referred to as the "Old Registry Office" when "William Bonn sold the .property to Richard McCarthy.

A new land registry office for Grenville County was built circa 1879.
