This a picture of a sampler made by Elizabeth Heck, daughter of Paul and Barbara, in 1781 while still in New York.

In 1784 Elizabeth married Owen Bowen and they had three children. Unfortunately, she died shortly after the birth of her third child at the age of 23. Elizabeth's sampler descended down in the family and is now in the possession of Elizabeth Mitchell. Stitches used are cross stitch, algerian eye, cross over one, tent and satin.

The words are: "For of speech wisdom shall be known and Learning by words of the tongue.  My love to thee is dearer than silver and gold.  Elizabeth Heck works this in this year 1781.
