Frederick Belfoy House

393 George Street

The house was built by Frederick Belfoy, a ship's carpenter, in 1842 and is a good example of frame Georgian Architecture.  The general lines of the house are simple and well balanced, the structure being 2 1/2 stories high, of wood frame and siding.  The building's two end chimneys have been reinstated and two half-round fan-shaped medallions have recently been discovered and restored in the north and south gables.  The main door is decorative yet simple.

The structure, although of Georgian style, has many unusual features.  Instead of a central hall, it has a side hall main floor plan and the design of the interior detail suggests a naval influence, especially noted in the impressive central curved staircase.

The exterior walls have been painted a vibrant yellow, the house's original colour.  This provides visual impact and does much to enliven the streetscape of George St.

The Belfoy House has undergone extensive restorations in the past  five years and has greatly benefited from the present owners' commitment and attention to detail.
