The Ebenezer Bacon House

385 Park St. West

Ebenezer Bacon, a tanner, purchased the property on which this house sits, for ten pounds sterling in 1856.  The house was likely built sometime between 1856 and 1875.In 1874, the property was passed to Mr. William Dunn, who served as the town's Mayor in 1875, 1879, and 1880.  A picture of the home was included in the Prescott Illustrated in 1878, as the residence of Mr. Edward Smith.

The house is a blend of Italianate Architecture (1845-1870) and Gothic Revival (1835-1890).  It is comprised of two adjoining rectangular 2 storey sections.  The entire exterior is built of red brick with stone on the basement section of the structure.  The roof is gently sloping with a wide overhang.  Thirty pairs of decorative wooden brackets assist in supporting the eaves.  The rectangular, double hung windows are highlighted by stone lintels.

There are two rectangular towers on the roof, one having twelve Gothic style arched windows which afford an excellent view of the town and river.  The other has louvres on all four sides, with a trap door in the floor so that in the summer, with all the doors open, it was ventilation for the whole house.

The attractive front porch is rectangular, with twenty decorative brackets at the roof line.  The blend of exterior designs found in the porch, roof treatment and towers bestows an image of grandeur in this fine house.
