The Stockade Barracks and Hospital Museum 356 East St., Prescott, ON |
The Stockade Barracks and Hospital Museum today is the oldest surviving military building in the province of Ontario. Built in 1810 by Major Edward Jessup, Loyalist founder of the town of Prescott, the building was to be used as a schoolhouse. Never finished, it was appropriated by the British military during the War of 1812 to form the nucleus of the strategically important Prescott garrison. A stockade was constructed enclosing the building and other temporary buildings. It served as a soldiers' barracks from 1812 to 1815. From 1815 to 1818 the second floor of the structure served as the garrison hospital to nearby Fort Wellington.
This 2 1/2 storey building was constructed using local cut stone in a traditional symmetrical Georgian form. The building includes a cellar kitchen with a large cooking fireplace, bake oven and provision store. Much of the interior trim has survived including decorative window shutters, elaborate fireplace mantles, doors and hardware dating from the period of military occupation. The structure has recently been painstakingly restored to its early 19th century appearance.
