Samuel Crane House 439 Edward St., Prescott, ON (Home of the Grenville County Historical Society)
|
Samuel Crane, a prominent Prescott business man and head of the largest boat barge forwarding house in Canada, had this lovely building constructed as his principle residence around 1830. Before the St. Lawrence canals were built, or railways thought of, Mr. Crane was one of the commercial magnates of the land. In every bay, at every wharf along the St. Lawrence River his boats were to be found.
This impressive edifice is a blend of Upper Canada Neo-Classical style (1810-1835) and Upper Canada Regency (1820-1840). Many United Empire Loyalists used one or a blend of these styles. Comprising two sections, the original front portion is rectangular in shape and 2 stories high, and the smaller 2 storey section was added around 1875. The windows are double hung with elongated sash and thin glazing bars; there are twelve sections to each window. The exterior walls are constructed of stone covered with stucco. There is a hip roof gently sloping down to the eaves, which are supported by 44 carved ornamental brackets which give strength and beauty to the roof line. The home was purchased by the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of the Diocese of Kingston in 1905 for use as a Convent. Today it is a graceful and much appreciated element of this main north-south street. (Cross streets are designated is east and west in Prescott based on the dividing line of Edward Street.)
