Annual Meeting April 24, 2004
A record group of approximately 80 United Empire Loyalists and Friends met for their annual meeting on Saturday, April 24, 2004 in the Spring Valley Community Hall.
Thirteen of those attending received their certificate of regular membership in the U.E.L.A.C., having satisfactorily proven descent from a United Empire Loyalist ancestor. These were Jane Hess, Allison Hess, Elisabeth Hess, Laura Hess, John Gardiner, Emily Gardiner, Jonathan Gardiner, Malcolm Gardiner and James Gardiner - all with Jonathan Fulford as their Loyalist ancestor; Bonnie Morley from Adam Vent, David Lang from Bemsley Buell and Lois Drummond and Don Galna from Abraham Maybee.
A turkey dinner with pie was served before the annual meeting.
The President, Myrtle Johnston, outlined our past events for the year and also those events planned for the future.
At Doors Open Ontario, the Wiltse Cemetery, which our group is helping to restore, is one of the sites open for visitation. It is just south of Athens at the former Wiltsetown area.
On June 13th, at St. Paul’s United Church in Prescott, there will be a church service with UEL Members and Friends in attendance. Don Galna, the guest speaker, will be giving a talk on Barbara Heck, the founder of Methodism in Canada.
On Nov. 8th, at the Brockville Tabernacle Church, 2nd Concession, Barry Wilson will speak about Benedict Arnold. Barry, a Parliamentary Reporter, is the Author of four books including "Benedict Arnold: A Traitor in Our Midst".
The guest speaker at the April 24th Annual Meeting, Fred Hayward, was the education chairman for the U.E.L.A.C. He spoke first on how and why we should work to further peoples’ knowledge of our history, stressing U.E.L. history. He then changed to 1800 period dress and gave a detailed account of the Embury and Heck families. These families established the Methodist church in both the United States and Canada. The Methodist church in Canada became the United Church.
The Embury and Heck families have many U.E. citizens living in Canada today.
