Wireless FAQ

Licensed Vs. Unlicensed - Making the Choice

The phrase, “you get what you pay for,” applies when comparing licensed and unlicensed systems. Any fair comparison cannot just be limited to the price of the system, but must address its quality.

A licensed wireless system means that the airwaves are reserved for your signal … from your home to the RipNET towers.

It is this word “licensed”  that allows RipNET to provide a true quality Internet signal and experience.

Unlicensed systems are typically used as a convenient way to connect to the Internet. Like airports, train stations or cafes.  There is no method to control the quality of the signal so your Internet connections may be infrequent or slow.

It has always been RipNET’s mission to provide the highest quality Internet experience for the residents of Leeds-Grenville.

Q - What is Wireless Internet Access?

Wireless Internet access provides high-speed access to the Internet without the use of a phone line. Much like a radio signal, data is transmitted to and from your computer via antennas.

Q - How fast is it?
Wireless Internet service is as fast as DSL or cable modem service. Depending on the service package wireless Internet access starts at 2 Mb / second.  And that is fast.

Q - What equipment do I need to use wireless service?

You will need a modem, placed inside your home  and an antenna, placed outside your home. The modem connects to the antenna via coaxial cable. You will also need a network card in each computer that you wish to connect to the Internet. RipNET provides all equipment and professionals install it.

Q - Do I need a line-of-sight survey?

Yes. RipNET needs to make sure you can receive a quality signal.

Q - Why does Licensed Wireless equipment cost more than WiFi based equipment?
1) Quality
These units are made to precise standards, specifically for RipNET’s wireless network.  This allows a consistent quality Internet experience.

2) Power
Our Units are more than 40 times more powerful than wi-fi based equipment. This power is what increases the reliability and the range of the network.

3) Security
Licensed wireless performs to a higher standard of security than other solutions.

Q - How does weather affect my signal?

On rare occasions extreme weather may interfere with the network.

Q - Do I have to dial up to my Internet Service Provider?

Wireless Internet access is an “always on” technology. This means that you do not have to wait for your modem to dial up; just open your Internet browser, and you are on the Internet within seconds.
